Double Entry Journal #2

Quote:
"What I am saying is that children come to school with different experiences. The experiences they have as young children are culturally driven. Within this, I see literacy use as cultural practice."

Reaction:
I have a strong reaction to this quote because I taught a reading program this summer called Energy Express and prior to starting we must go through training on how to deal with children from different cultures and poverty. Experiences that middle class students bring to school are going to be different than those experiences that a low income or higher class students. It is important as teachers that we try to incorporate all of our students experiences into the classroom. If we tried to use our students experiences within the classroom it would make things more relevant and important to them.

Double Entry Journal #1

Quote:
"If a television network proposed a "real life" show treating poor African-American, Latinos, American Indians, Asians, or Jews as curiosities, they, and all Americans of good will, would be justifiably outraged." (O, Brien, 2003)

Reaction:

I chose this quote because I find it very true, people get alarmed and upset by the way people of another race or ethnicity may be treated but yet people who are different but white they are still made fun of in a way that othergroups of people are not talked about. By having a show like this they will pick the "worst" possible people who are somewhat different than the other people who live in this area. Everyone is different no matter what area you are from or grew up in, just because their our characteristics about a state or region doesn't mean every single person there is like that.

I think it is funny that people assume that all people from West Virginia or Appalachia look the same. Their are some people who look like these actors but for the most part no one really looks or acts like this where I am from. The sterotypes people have about certain areas are so wrong.
