"If a television network proposed a "real life" show treating poor African-American, Latinos, American Indians, Asians, or Jews as curiosities, they, and all Americans of good will, would be justifiably outraged." (O, Brien, 2003)
Reaction:
I chose this quote because I find it very true, people get alarmed and upset by the way people of another race or ethnicity may be treated but yet people who are different but white they are still made fun of in a way that othergroups of people are not talked about. By having a show like this they will pick the "worst" possible people who are somewhat different than the other people who live in this area. Everyone is different no matter what area you are from or grew up in, just because their our characteristics about a state or region doesn't mean every single person there is like that.

I think it is funny that people assume that all people from West Virginia or Appalachia look the same. Their are some people who look like these actors but for the most part no one really looks or acts like this where I am from. The sterotypes people have about certain areas are so wrong.

I didn’t see a reaction to your quote, but I think you have a good point when you say that not many people from West Virginia look like the Beverly Hillbillies. I honestly have never seen anyone from West Virginia look like this. I’m sure there are a few remote people who may look like this, but most don’t see it, and it is definitely not the majority of West Virginia. With all the TV talk I keep thinking about the show "Swamp people." The people on that show from the swamps of Louisiana are far more remote and "Hillbilly" than anyone I’ve seen from West Virginia. I don’t see or hear anyone talking about them.
ReplyDeleteI cannot read your reaction to the quote. I enjoyed your related source though. I agree with your statement. On a daly basis, I see way more people that don't look like hillbillies than those that actually do. No one really looks like the people in the photograph! It is terrible that this is the way everyone else in the world sees us!!!
ReplyDeleteEmily, I'm not so sure where your reaction is, but you've made a good point.I've rarely seen anyone look like this in West Virginia!
ReplyDeleteEmily, I would have liked to read your reaction, but I think we all agree that your example of the Beverly Hillbillies is a perfect of example of how far off some stereotypes can be.
