Quote:
"What I am saying is that children come to school with different experiences. The experiences they have as young children are culturally driven. Within this, I see literacy use as cultural practice."

I have a strong reaction to this quote because I taught a reading program this summer called Energy Express and prior to starting we must go through training on how to deal with children from different cultures and poverty. Experiences that middle class students bring to school are going to be different than those experiences that a low income or higher class students. It is important as teachers that we try to incorporate all of our students experiences into the classroom. If we tried to use our students experiences within the classroom it would make things more relevant and important to them.

Well said! It is very important to relate to the student by using their experiences. Children learn best with they can relate to it.
ReplyDeleteI agree! As learned in human growth and development, when young children are exposed to others experiences, they develop empathy and can better relate to their peers. Especially now days, I feel society is becoming more egocentric and less empathetic. And with teachers like Donny's, do we really wonder why?
ReplyDeleteI agree that we as educators will need to shape how we teach by the backgrounds of our classes, and that each class and each student may have different needs based off of that background.
ReplyDeleteThe students we have in our class will shape how we respond to our students and how we teach each individual. We need to teach our students to be culturally responsive to their classmates, and we as teachers need to be aware of our students cultures and backgrounds. If not then we will fail to prepare students to be culturally literate.
